According to Stevenson (2000), self-employment as an alternative to traditional employment for displaced workers is one of the most important issues in entrepreneurship today. Corporate downsizing events create many necessity based entrepreneurs who are often strongly encouraged to enter self-employment as an alternative to returning to traditional based employment options. However, once they enter the entrepreneurial realm, most do not remain in self-employment for more than five years. The public policy question that needs to be considered is: is self-employment a viable option for this category of individuals?

This paper reports on an innovative pilot project embedded in a capstone unit of Australia's leading undergraduate degree program in Entrepreneurship. The project was developed as part of an industry linkage pilot agreement between the Entrepreneurship program and one of the 'Big Four' consultancy companies, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. A pedagogically innovative model of applied learning is proposed that enabled Higher Education students enrolled in a Bachelor of Business (Entrepreneurship) degree to apply in a dynamic (and sometimes chaotic) environment skill and capabilities they already possessed (as opposed to work-based learning about a particular job). Material handling is never value-adding, but always increases the production costs. The objective of any new handling system should therefore be to reduce handling and then to find cost-effective solutions for those operations that cannot be eliminated. The systems approach can be used to analyse and solve material handling problems, ensuring that all alternatives are considered. This increases the likelihood of a successful project. The feasibility study should be used at the outset of a project to ensure that a shortlist of the best solutions can be made. This is done before major capital expense is incurred.
