Cultura, Tecn...
In this thesis an analysis has been made of the reasons that led to the appearance of a candidature of the Northern Portuguese and Galician intangible heritage presented to UNESCO in 2005.
Sociocultural dynamics this project brought about are examined both during its making up and after its classification’s denial as World Heritage.
The Galician nationalist assertion confronts with the weak mobilization on the Portuguese side where we can feel a less contentious relation with central government.
So this candidature appears as possible tool to emphasize Galician individuality face to face with the Spanish state.

The parish of Ramalhal, part of Torres Vedras municipality, and of the district of Lisbon, presents as its main economic activity a production of charcoal. One of the small villages in this parish is Vila Facaia, where a collection of six furnaces make all the activity. This production had two starting phases, known trough the architectural study of the furnaces where the charcoal is produced. The first one in the 40’s/50’s of the 20th Century, and the second one in the 70’s/80’s at the end of the 20th Century, at the time of a huge industrial boom, after the April 25th. The charcoal is obtained by the burning of the wood. At the beginning the raw material was cork-oak and holm-oak, from Alentejo, more recently the producers started using wood from the parish nearby, eucalyptus. On the concerning of this subject, appears the need to pr...

This research is about the mediating practices of the guides, also known as cicerones, more specifically on the analysis of the historical discourse on tourism contexts, guided visits. The following questions conduct this research: How are the monuments presented to the persons who visit them? Who chooses which contents to present? Which are the interests involved? How do the audiences perceive the contents exposed and communicated? How do different persons - curators, historians, guides, visitors, etc. - contribute for the messages that are being transmitted? It is intended to analyse the transformation of the historical discourse into a tourism resource.
The recognition of the intangible cultural heritage was accomplished with the historical effort of social sciences at showing the importance of this same heritage, which didn't have legal protection in documentation already produced for the natural and historical heritage. Its definition was being refined until it was established in UNESCO's Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage, 2003.
In March 28th, 2013, was delivered at UNESCO the nomination of the cante alentejano to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. After evaluation of the nomination, the result will be divulged in November of the current year. This nomination reflects the will of several entities to obtain international recognition about the patrimonial value of the cante and, also, publicly assume the commitment in promoting and savin...
People with visual impairment live a daily challenge to overcome
physical and social barriers that are part of the world where we
live, in a society thought to the sighted population. In addition to
the basic daily needs, people with disabilities are entitled to
education, culture and leisure, as well as desires and interests that
often end up being forgotten even by them. By not being available
accessibility means in public spaces or, in this particular case, in
cultural centers, we exclude these people from the enjoyment of
their content and the enjoyment of their rights and so they prefer to
gather in their comfort zones in the belief that society is not
prepared to receive them.
The disability and stigma associated with it are introductory
subjects for this study that aims to address social inclusion and the
role of cu...
This work is about an anthropological study on the several uses of heritage, how heritage is perceived in its own locality, and its relation, as an element of economic sustainability, within rural areas lacking bigger financial resources. For that purpose, I did a comparative study taking as object of reflection the historic centres of Mértola, in Portugal, and of Areia, in Brazil, which are renowned examples within the scope of actions of heritage preservation and value. The methodological procedures used were, apart from a bibliographical study concerning the theme in question, field work with the different agents that make up the social fabric of the aforementioned localities, taking into account their words and actions within a context that allows them to negotiate the historic centre as an asset of heritage value.
