The umbilical cord blood has been used as a source of stem cells in the treatment of several diseases, especially haematologic malignancies. Since the first transplant performed with these cells in the 1980s, numerous transplants have been carried out, which demonstrates that the umbilical cord blood represents an alternative to other sources of stem cells.
