The BUGS language offers a very flexible way of specifying complex statistical models for the purposes of Gibbs sampling, while its JAGS variant offers very convenient R integration via the rjags package. However, including smoothers in JAGS models can involve some quite tedious coding, especially for multivariate or adaptive smoothers. Further, if an additive smooth structure is required then some care is needed, in order to centre smooths appropriately, and to find appropriate starting values. R package mgcv implements a wide range of smoothers, all in a manner appropriate for inclusion in JAGS code, and automates centring and other smooth setup tasks. The purpose of this note is to describe an interface between mgcv and JAGS, based around an R function, jagam, which takes a generalized additive model (GAM) as specified in mgcv and a...
Hillforts in Scotland are smaller than their counterparts in southern Britain and extremely difficult to define as a site category. This is even more true in the western and northern parts of the country traditionally described as Atlantic Scotland, where the plethora of small enclosed sites forms a continuum in terms of size and morphology that cuts across the boundaries of current classifications. Using the recent definition of a hillfort by J.D Hill as a site type that is not a farmstead, this thesis attempts to analyse enclosed sites in terms of their area enclosed, morphology/architecture and particularly their landscape position to try to identify groups of sites or individual monuments that are these ‘not-farmsteads’. Three case study areas have been chosen for GIS-based analysis. Skye and Kintyre are in Atlantic Scotla...

Building on the strengths of its popular previous edition Management: Core Concepts and Applications, 2nd Australasian edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect the three keyaspects of contemporary undergraduate introductory management education: Management theory Concept application Skills development. The text's 16 chapters are presented in a lively and concise mannerideal for the typical 12 or 13 teaching weeks of a semester. Itsflexible framework allows instructors to teach students through the useof interactive tools such as case studies, exercises and projects. These action-oriented learning activities complement the text's solidfoundation of knowledge-based theory material. There is a balanced coverage of both small to medium sizedenterprises and larger multinational organisations operating inAustralia, ...
Building on the strengths of its popular previous editions, Management 4th Australasian edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to both reflect contemporarymanagement thinking and to highlight the issues facing managers of the21st century. A solid foundation of theory provides the background to a wealth ofillustrative examples, highlighting organisations operating inAustralia, New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region. A balance of small-to medium- size enterprises and larger multinational corporations arefeatured. A critical thinking perspective is integrated throughout thebook, asking and encouraging student to analyse research and theory inthe light of contemporary management practice. Each copy of the printed textbook comes with a free copy of the Wiley Desktop Edition:a full electronic version of the text that allows s...
Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most common subtype of renal malignancy in adults.1 The disease is usually radiologically imaged with computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for diagnosis, staging, treatment planning and follow up. Recently, functional studies targeting glucose or folate metabolism with fludeoxyglucose (FDG) or prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) binding ligands respectively have been reported to be used to stage the disease.2 Positron emission tomography (PET) using PSMA ligand detected larger number of lesions in comparison to conventional imaging modalities such as CT in a small prospective clinical trial.3 In this project, we directly compared the findings from FDG and PSMA PET in a patient with metastatic ccRCC. We assessed ex-vivo tumour characteristics to explain these f...
When there is qualitative information about the underlying processes and structure of a dynamical system, it may be possible to infer very accurate quantitative information about these processes using only an output time series from the system. We illustrate how this can be accomplished for time series data from a delay-differential equation with a single fixed delay. Our approach exploits modern techniques for non-parametric function estimation, is robust to fairly high levels of dynamic noise and measurement error, and can be extended straightforwardly to more general delay-differential systems and multivariate systems.
