Studies have been undertaken to utilise the possible potential of the rodlike, helical structures associated with polyglutamates and polyisocyanates for piezoelectric (PE) and nonlinear optical (second harmonic generation (SHG)) applications. Various techniques have been employed to form samples/films of these polymers containing oriented helices whose bulk structures are non-centrosymmetric, (an important criterium for the aforementioned applications). Owing to the poor yields obtained for certain intermediates in the synthetic stages of these polymers, only poly('S-benzyl-L-glutamate) (PBzLG) and poly(n- hexylisocyanate) (PHIC) were available for subsequent studies. Piezoelectric work was limited to hydrostatic measurements (d3h) made on electrically poled, composite (guest host), polymer samples. Phase separation was common in all t...

This report presents and discusses the results of the Survey of Irrigation of Outdoor Crops in 2005 for England and Wales. The data includes areas irrigated and volumes of water used, by crop category, as well as information on irrigation scheduling, application methods, water sources and water resources. The survey was sent to all registered agricultural holdings that irrigated at least 1 hectare, as reported to the 2005 June Agricultural Survey. It is estimated that responses were received for England from 21% of all irrigated holdings, representing 27% of the total irrigated area. For Wales, which contains less than 1% of the total irrigated area, the corresponding figures are lower, at 12% of holdings and 17% of the total irrigated area. In addition, all others who responded to the 2001 survey were surveyed, but are not included in...
Pyroelectric infra-red detectors have been of-interest for many years because of their wide wavelength response, good sensitivity and lack of need for cooling. Arrays of such detectors, comprising a pyroelectric material interfaced to an application specific integrated circuit for signal amplification and read out, provide an attractive solution to the problem of collecting spatial information on the IR distribution in a scene. Sol gel deposition provides an excellent technique for the growth of ferroelectric thin films and Mn-doped PZT30/70 films can be grown at 560°C with FD = 3.85 × 10-5 Pa-1/2. A new concept is presented here: the use of arrays of thin film pyroelectric detector elements with integrated radiation collectors designed to enhance the intensity of the radiation falling on the element. Two collector designs are presente...
Research motivation: Bone tissue scaffolds offer a way forward in a strategy to change from tissue replacement to tissue regeneration. Bone tissue scaffolds are a combination of a physical construct, with clearly defined three-dimensional spatial properties, and biological cells. The microstructure of this construct is the bridge between the physicochemical properties of the scaffold and the cellular processes responsible for tissue regeneration. Gap statement: A formal design methodology has yet to be applied for the design of bone tissue scaffolds Aims and objectives: The aim of this research thesis is to select and apply design methods to the design of bone tissue scaffolds. The objectives are: 1. Review the current state of the art in design theory and methodologies for successful applications of design methods 2. Identify which de...
Investment in capacity expansion remains one of the most critical decisions for a manufacturing organisation with global production facilities. Multiple factors need to be considered making the decision process very complex. The purpose of this paper is to establish the state-of-the-art in multi-factor models for capacity expansion of manufacturing plants within a corporation. The research programme consisting of an extensive literature review and a structured assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the current research is presented. The study found that there is a wealth of mathematical multi-factor models for evaluating capacity expansion decisions however no single contribution captures all the different facets of the problem.
This thesis describes the advancements of the application of thermal tensioning techniques to different weld geometries in order to eliminate buckling distortion. The main goal of this work is to better understand these techniques through experimental and numerical investigation and increase their technological maturity to aid industrial implementation. The thermal tensioning techniques investigated in this work are Thermal Tensioning by Cooling and Thermal Tensioning by Heating. The investigation for both techniques encompasses thermal source characterisation, application to different weld geometries and residual stress measurements and analysis of both butt and fillet welded samples. A detailed technology transfer study of Thermal Tensioning by Cooling was carried out in which different aspects of the application of TTC to arc weldin...
Preliminary investigation at the beginning of this research showed that informatics on point-of-care (POC) devices was limited to basic data generation and processing. This thesis is based on publications of several studies during the course of the research. The aim of the research is to model and analyse information generation and exchange in telehealth systems and to identify and analyse the capabilities of these systems in managing chronic diseases which utilise point-of-care devices. The objectives to meet the aim are as follows: (i) to review the state-of-the-art in informatics and decision support on point-of-care devices. (ii) to assess the current level of servitization of POC devices used within the home environment. (iii) to identify current models of information generation and exchange for POC devices using a telehealth pers...
This work investigates and provides a methodology that enables better prediction of brake performance. Aircraft brake performance depends on the tribological properties of the friction couple used in the brake design. The behaviour of this couple combines both surface and bulk characteristics of the material. The increase in aircraft performance requirements has led to the development of new brake designs and new friction materials. The development of brakes for large commercial aircraft has stabilised to that of a carbon-carbon composite multi-disk brake design. The results of this investigation established a relationship between mean mass loading and the mean friction radius of the brake. This relationship provides a statistically good description of the results and will provide the brake performance engineer with a useful tool. In a...
