The purpose of this paper is to explore the factors that influence supply chain segmentation when selling to consumers through retail chains. The initial research is based on a review of supply chain segmentation literature and the application of relevant parameters to a specific case study, comprising two major brands in the sporting goods industry. The empirical research itself comprises semi-structured interviews, covering demand planning, sales, marketing and supply chain managers, supported by quantitative demand data. The case study demonstrates that a number of the existing frameworks are relevant but that none are adequate by themselves. It also shows the importance of linking segmentation of the end consumers to that of the retail intermediaries. The paper provides an exploratory supply chain segmentation framework for compani...

The history of tea development in Tanzania from the early part of this century
to the present is summarised. Average yields of made tea from well managed
estates in the Mufindi district have increased from around 600 kg ha-1 in the
late 1950s to 3000 kg ha-1 at the present time: by comparison, yields from
smallholder farms have remained much lower, averaging only 400-500 kg ha-1.
There have been a large number of technical, economic and other changes over the
last 30 to 40 years. The removal of shade trees, the use of herbicides, the
application of NPK compound fertilisers, the introduction of irrigation (on some
estates) and changes in harvesting policy have all contributed to the increases
in yield. Financial and infrastructural problems have contributed to the low
yields from many smallholders and others, and have limited the uptake...
The heterogeneous three-dimensional spatial distribution of mycotoxins has
proven to be one of the main limitations for the design of effective sampling
protocols. Current sample collection protocols for mycotoxins have been designed
to estimate the mean concentration and fail to characterise the spatial
distribution of the mycotoxin concentration due to the aggregation of the
incremental samples. Geostatistical techniques have been successfully applied to
overcome similar problems in many research areas. However, little work has been
developed on the use of geostatistics for the design of sampling protocols for
mycotoxins. This paper focuses on the analysis of the two and three-dimensional
spatial structure of fumonisins B1 (FB1) and B2 (FB2) in maize in a bulk store
using a geostatistical approach and on how results help determine th...
This PHD project aims to develop a service design system which has a customer-centric view and delivers a balance between profit and value for both customers and service providers. The system will enable designers to assess the design and provide decision support and rationale at an early service design development stage. Also during the lifecycle of the service it would provide a better cost estimation for the service provider to support its future decisions.
The two first chapters give an overview of the service field and the research area. Chapter 1, the introduction, states the aim and objectives of this research along with setting the field of the rationale behind the motivation and scope. Chapter 2, the literature review, gives a thorough overview of the service design area mentioning the theories, techniques, methodologies and m...
Purpose: This paper reviews current literature and contributes a set of findings that capture the current state-of-the-art of the topic of green production.
Design/methodology/approach: A literature review to capture, classify and summarize the main body of knowledge on green production and, translate this into a form that is readily accessible to researchers and practitioners in the more mainstream operations management community.
Findings: The existing knowledge base is somewhat fragmented. This is a relatively unexplored topic within mainstream operations management research and one which could provide rich opportunities for further exploration.
Originality/value: This paper sets out to review current literature, from a more conventional production operations perspective, and contributes a set of findings that capture the current st...
Transition of the attachment fine boundary layer was investigated using a large
swept cylinder. Results for natural transition and transition tripping with two-dimensional
trip wires were simila to those obtained by Poll using a similar, but smaller, model. ]Lower
displacement thickness Reynolds numbers but larger trip sizes, than for the flat-plate
boundary layer, were required for transition. The investigation of transition tripping was
then extended to involve three-dimensional trips. The attachment line boundary layer was
less susceptible to three-dimensional trips than to two-dimensional trips but upper and lower
bounds of attachment line Reynolds number for transition were identical. It was also found
that the roughness Reynolds numbers for fully effective three-dimensional trips were similar
for the attachment line and flat-plat...
The pyroelectric, dielectric and DC resistive properties of Sb and Cr-doped ceramics with a base composition of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.025(Zr0.825Ti0.175)0.975O3 have been studied. Sb doping has been shown to produce a linear reduction in Curie temperature (TC=−22z+294 °C) with concentration (z) and to give an increase in pyroelectric coefficient from 250 to 310 μCm−2 K−1 for z increasing from 0 to 3 at.%. It also produces first a reduction and then an increase in both dielectric constant and loss, so that the 33 Hz pyroelectric figures of merit (FOM's) are as follows: FV peaks at 3.8×10−2 m2 C−1 and FD peaks at 1.2×10−5 Pa−1/2. The resistivity is increased substantially from 1.1×1011 to ca 6×1011 Ωm with 1 at.% Sb, thereafter changing little. The behaviour has been explained in terms of Sb acting as a donor ion, reducing oxygen vacancy conce...
