The extensive use of air conditioning for indoor cooling in offices and large
commercial buildings in Kuwait represents a major part of the power and electricity
consumption in that country. The main objective of this research was to investigate
ice and chilled water cool thermal storage technologies and operating strategies for air
conditioning. This was motivated by the extreme climatic conditions in Kuwait and
the necessity to reduce both maximum power demand and energy consumption whilst
being economically feasible. This work represents the first such study undertaken.
In Kuwait approximately 45% of the total annual exported electrical energy is
consumed solely by air conditioning systems as a result of the very high ambient
temperatures occurring between March and October. Furthermore, it was estimated air
conditioning systems rep...
The work presented in this thesis focuses on the synthesis of nanomaterials, formulation and
printing of Ag nanoparticle and nanowire inks for two distinct applications: a) inkjet printing
of Ag nanoparticle films on ceramic substrates with the aim of providing a smaller size of
printed feature at lower cost than that can be obtained with the conventionally used screen
printing, and b) Ag nanowires films prompted by the wide quest of electronics industry for
materials with increased flexibility, lower cost and higher transmittance to replace indium tin
oxide.
Ag nanoparticles with a size of 50 nm were successfully synthesized and dispersed in
aqueous medium. Two preparation routes were compared in order to distinguish the effects of
solvents treatment of particles and their influence on the suspension characteristics including
Ag loadi...
Abstract
Work is being undertaken to produce an uncooled pyroelectric infra-red detector array which incorporates within its structure, an array of radiation collectors made by the bulk micro-machining of silicon. Development aspects of the processing route are presented here.
Purpose − The purpose of this paper is to propose a new outer-rotor permanent-
magnet flux-switching machine for in-wheel electric vehicle propulsion. The
paper documents both the design procedure and performance investigation of this
novel machine. Design/methodology/approach − The topology and preliminary sizing
equations of the outer-rotor permanent-magnet flux-switching machine are
introduced. Both the number and width of rotor poles are then optimized using
comprehensive two-dimensional FEA. The machine losses are particularly
investigated by transient FEA for the optimal design. Findings − A outer-rotor
permanent-magnet flux-switching machine, with 12 stator poles and 22 rotor
poles, is most suitable for the proposed application. The analytical sizing
equations are quite efficient with a suitable level of accuracy for preliminary...
High-torque and low-speed electrical drives are often employed for applications where mechanical gearing cannot be accommodated. On the other hand, permanent-magnet (PM) gear has drawn significant attention from both academies and industries due to the conspicuous merits, such as reduced acoustic noise, maintenance free, improved reliability, precise peak torque transmission capability, and inherent overload protection. In this paper, a magnetic-geared PM brushless motor is presented. It is a novel low-speed and high-torque motor which merges the advantages of conventional PM brushless motor and PM gear. Its topology and operation principle are introduced. Some techniques are employed to optimize and improve the motor performance, while the validity of the proposed techniques is verified with finite-element analysis. Moreover, an alter...
Permanent-magnet flux-switching (PMFS) machine offers high torque density,
impressive flux-weakening capability and mechanical ruggedness because of its
distinctive configuration, and is potentially suitable for the application in
automotive integrated-starter-generators (ISGs). However, the PMFS machine
generally exhibits higher cogging torque compared with other machines commonly
used in ISGs. Minimisation of the cogging torque in the PMFS machine for its
utility in ISGs is therefore of particular importance. Four rotor topologies are
proposed here as cost-effective means to suppress the cogging torque of a PMFS
ISG. The validity of the proposed techniques has been confirmed by both two-
dimensional finite-element analysis and experimental results. Moreover, the
influence on the back electromagnetic force by these techniques is also

Unsteady supersonic flow round an aerofoil of infinite span is considered in the first part of the paper. It is shown that the pressure at any given point of an aerofoil under forward acceleration can be analysed into three components, one of which is the steady (Ackeret)pressure due to the instantaneous velocity, while of the other two, one depends directly on the acceleration, and one on the square of the velocity, during a limited time interval preceding the instant under consideration. However, the difference between the total pressure and the "steady pressure component" is such that it can be
neglected in all the definitely supersonic conditions which are likely to occur in practice.
The oscillatory supersonic flow round a Delta wing inside the Mach cone emanating from its apex is considered in the second part of the paper. Partic...
The development of health monitoring technologies for aerospace systems creates a number of challenges for the community of engineers and technical specialists as they seek to integrate the technology into well defined working practices. These challenges do not just extend to the technical, but require a number of commercial questions to be addressed. It is of vital importance, that there is a clearly identified need for aerospace health monitoring, both from a technological and commercial viewpoint. If these needs cannot be identified, then any attempt for marketing health monitoring as a necessary future technological requirement is doomed for failure. Health monitoring technology will need to either deliver significant cost saving benefits to the aircraft operator or demonstrated increases in aircraft safety. The objective of the pa...
