The recent interest in the air bus conception of air travel is reflected
in the aircraft chosen for study by the students in the Department of Aircraft
Design during the 1963 and 1965 academic years.
The first study was based upon the use of four propeller turbine engines
to power an aircraft capable of carrying up to 40,000 lb. of payload over
short stage lengths. Emphasis was placed on the need for operations with
mixed passenger and freight loads and the fuselage layout incorporates two
decks, the lower one of which is designed as a freighthold with nose loading
doors.
The second study was similar except that four wing mounted pure jet
engines replaced the propeller turbines of the earlier design. The cruising
speed is thus some 50 per cent higher with a Mach number limitation of 0.8.
The two deck fuselage layout is retained, but wi...
This paper treats the elastic stability of supported
rectangular plates of sandwich construction with isotropic and
aeolotropic fillings under compression and shear loading.
Formulae are developed for critical stresses for flat and
curved panels in compression and flat panels in shear for the
buckling of the whole panel, also for the wrinkling or local
failure of the faces of flat panels in compression. A method
is indicated for calculating the critical load of a cylinder
in pure bending.
It is established that for a wide range of conditions
the critical stress for panels buckling in compression is
independent of the form of the filling providing it is
symmetrical about the normal; of the elastic constants of
the filling only the transverse shear is of concern. As a
result a simple extension of the equivalent plate theory of
greatly im...
This project consists of researching, designing, developing, prototyping and testing a device that clamps onto a wheelie bin and easily compresses the waste inside. Once attached, by pulling on the lever, the device will compress the contents inside allowing for disposal of more waste. The design is easily assembled, light and sturdy enough so that any household individual can use it. Prototype testing was performed to identify the required forces necessary to compress a sufficient amount of waste and identifying which materials or types of waste can be compressed. The prototype testing showed that the device is capable of compressing the normal household wastes (compressing plastic bottles, cardboards, tin cartons) up to 45% off the original volume. The paper discusses the design, development and testing of this device to appreciate t...
The rapid growth Information systems and advanced network technologies have significant impact on enterprises around the world. Enterprises are trying to gain competitive advantage in open global markets by using the latest technologies, along with advanced networks, to create collaboration, reduce costs, and maximize productivity. The combination of latest technologies and advanced manufacturing networks technologies lead to growth of new manufacturing model named Cloud Manufacturing which can shift the manufacturing industry from product-oriented manufacturing to services-oriented manufacturing. This paper explores the literature about the current Manufacturing problems, understands the concept of Cloud Computing Technology, introduces Cloud Manufacturing and its role in the enterprise, and investigates the obstacles and challenges ...
A preliminary survey of the possible applications of variable sweepback
indicated that a substantial improvement in performance can be expected when
the concept is applied to a naval strike aircraft. In order to assess this
performance gain and to obtain experience of the engineering problems involved,
the subject of the design study 'ay the students in the Department of
Aircraft Design during the 1964 academic year was chosen to be a variable
sweepback naval strike aircraft.
The aircraft has a maximum take off weight of 60, 000 lb. and a limiting
Mach number at altitude of 2. 5. Various payloads up to a maximum of
4000 lb. can be carried externally over ranges which vary up to 4000 n. miles
according to the role. Alternative mechanical arrangements for the wing
hinge system were investigated.
A formulation for the shock wave structure is devised by viewing
the transition as a phenomenon in which non-equilibrium effects play
an important role. The essence of the method is the approximation
of Boltzmann's equation by a simpler kinetic model. Initially, the
distribution function in Boltzmann's collision integral is expressed
in terms of a function of deviation from local equilibrium. Then,
by suitably transforming the complete collision term, the molecular
velocities after collision are eliminated. At this stage the
formulation of the method is specialized to hard sphere molecules and
the problem of deriving a model equation thus reduces to one of
assigning an expression for the deviation function. In the first
instance, this function is chosen to be zero and an exploratory model is
obtained which, when its variable collision ...
This paper presents an interactive tactile graphical display, for the visually impaired information technology access applications. The display consists of a matrix of dots. Each dot is an electro rheological micro actuator. The actuator design and development process is presented in this paper. Prototype size 124x4 dots was manufactured. An advanced software tools and embedded system based on voltage matrix manipulation has been developed, to provide the display near real time control. The experimental tests carried out into the developed prototype showed that each actuator of the matrix was able to provide a vertical movement of 0.7 mm and vertical holding force of 100 to 200 mN. The stroke and dynamic response tests showed the practicability of the developed tactile display, for the visually impaired information technology applicati...
This research paper presents a cost engine system that estimates the whole life cycle cost of long-term digital preservation (LTDP) activities using cloud-based technologies. A qualitative research methodology has been employed and the activity based costing (ABC) technique has been used to develop the cost model. The unified modelling language (UML) notation and the object oriented paradigm (OOP) are utilised to design the architecture of the software system. In addition, the service oriented architecture (SOA) style has been used to deploy the function of the cost engine as a web service in order to ensure its accessibility over the web. The cost engine is a module that is part of a larger digital preservation system and has been validated qualitatively through experts’ opinion. Its benefits are realised in the accurate and detailed...
The improved performance of aircraft during the past decade has resulted
in the need for new design and production techniques. Particular examples are
integral construction and the use of sandwich panels. Although these processes
are costly, especially when applied to titanium and steel construction, their use
is likely to be necessary, at least to some extent. on many supersonic aircraft.
The supersonic airliner is no exception to this and the paper discusses the design
aspects of this type of aircraft which have a bearing on production problems. It
is concluded that more research aimed at reducing the cost of sophisticated forms
of construction is required.
Concentrating solar power systems currently have a high capital cost when
compared with other energy generating systems. The solar energy is captured in the
form of thermal energy rather than directly electrical, which is attractive as thermal
energy is easier and currently cheaper to store in large amounts. It is also used
directly as processing heat including desalination and water purification. For the
technology to compete against other generating systems it is important to reduce the
electrical energy cost to the $0.05 per kilowatt-hour level. One of the significant
capital costs is the solar field, which contains the concentrators. To reduce the cost
of this field, novel constructions and improvements to the durability and lifetime of
the concentrators are required. Techniques for characterising the shape, durability
and optical ...
