This study proposed to answer research questions about the efficacy of using computer-assisted instruction (CAI) to augment kindergarten emergent reading skills. Five assessment instruments were used to measure kindergarten students' emergent reading skills. In this quasi-experimental design (experimental school vs. control school), repeated measures were used (pretest and posttest). Change scores (posttest minus pretest) were calculated to run analyses. Morrow's Story Retelling was significant for the experimental group, p=.006. The Woodcock-Johnson Passage Comprehension (WJPC) subtest was significant for the interaction of group and type of kindergarten program, p=.005, meaning more children in full day programs and using CAI were reading and understanding passages. Unrelated to the hypotheses that were tested, the Phonological Aware...

The study had two purposes: (A) to examine the relationship between the ideal and the real roles associated with pre-student teaching experiences in the laboratory school as perceived by (1) pre-student teachers, (2) cooperating teachers, and (3) university supervisors and (B) to determine if the position of the respondent conditioned the agreement-disagreement in their perceptions of the ideal and real roles. The term "ideal'' role described the optimum in pre-student teaching experiences; the term "real" role related to the existing situation experienced by the respondents. An opinionnaire was developed specifically for this study; it was submitted to a panel of experts for refinement; it was pilot tested for validity; and it was administered during the Winter Quarter of 1977-1978. The total population which responded to the instrumen...

Twenty active male volunteers were studied to compare maximum oxygen consumption (˙V02 max) to the oxidative capacity of a muscle homogenate (˙Q02) and to determine how fiber type relates to these measures of aerobic power. Maximum oxygen consumption was determined by bicycle ergometry. Correlations of 0.81 and 0.75 were found between ˙V02 max and ˙Q02and ˙V02 max and %ST, respectively (p<.01). A significant relationship (r=0.74) was also found between ˙Q02 and %ST. Multiple correlation analysis (R=0.85) indicated that 72% (R2=0.72) of the variance in ˙V02 max could be accounted for by the combined effect of ˙Q02 and fiber type. These data therefore indicate that Q02 and fiber type play a large role in determining maximum aerobic power but these factors cannot completely account for the total variance in ˙V02max.

This investigation was designed first to determine the effect upon learning of various instructional treatments related to adjunct instruction, and second to determine the interaction of certain student characteristics with method in learning under these various instructional treatments. The term adjunct instruction is used to indicate instructional material designed to be used with other educational media, in this investigation, mainly the educational psychology textbook and secondarily with outside readings and instructor presentations. With respect to the treatments, the variables were format of the instructional material, as linear program or instructional quiz; the method of presentation of the instructional material, as teaching machine with immediate feedback and framed exposure, simple immediate feedback and framed exposure, sim...
A methodology for the synthesis of substituted pyridines via Diels-Alder condensation of N-(O-tbutyldimethylsilyloxy)-3-methyl-l-aza-1,3-butadiene (65) and N-(O-tbutyl dimethylsilyloxy)-2-methyl-l-aza-1,3-butadiene (66) with substituted 1,4-benzoquinones was developed. The novel azadienes 65 and 66 were synthesized by direct condensation of N-(Otbutyldimethylsilyloxy) hydroxylamine with methacrolein and methyl vinyl ketone respectively. The azadiene 66 was also prepared by condensation of N-(O-tbutyldimethylsilyloxy) hydroxylamine with 3-bromo-2-butanone followed by dehydrohalogenation of the resulting imine with potassium tbutoxide. The Diels-Alder condensation of 66 with N-phenylmaleimide produced N-phenyl-6methyl-2,3-pyridinedicarboximide (82). The [4+2] cycloaddition of 66 with Nphenylmaleimide, naphthoquinone, 2-acetamido-5-bromo- a...
D. O. Fagunwa's Igbo Olodumare (The Forest of God) is a novel about the story of Olowo-aiye's adventure in the Forest of God. Olowo-aiye sets out to Igbo Olodumare (The Forest of God) out of sheer love for an adventure and a quest for an opportunity to prove himself as a powerfulhunter who cannot be daunted by the awe of the unknown--a basic characteristic of the traditional Yoruba hunters. Thus Fagunwa, in his characteristic vividness of imagination, artistic prowess, dazzling language, and a compelling descriptive skill, projects events and episodes around Olowo-aiye as he moves along on his journey to, in and from Igbo Olodumare. The events and the episodes are those of Olowo-aiye's struggle with the trolls, gnomes, weird creatures, and his visits to the sage, (Mr.) Death, and Miss Disease. After this experience-packed sojourn in th...
