The Alpha-Beta heuristic is a method for pruning unneeded branches from the move tree of a game. The algorithm makes use of information gained about part of the tree to reject those branches which will not affect the principle variation.
The microscopic chemical mechanisms of heterogeneous reactions involving HC on crystalline ice and nitric acid trihydrate (NAT) are of fundamental interest to physical chemists, because such reactions yield "active" chlorine compounds that are readily photolyzed to yield radicals responsible for the annual destruction of polar stratospheric ozone. Using molecular-orbital and density-functional-based computational methods that are extensively validated, partial dissociation of HCl is shown to be kinetically rapid and thermodynamically favorable on an extended ice Ih surface model with two dangling OH groups in close proximity to adsorbed HCl at a binding site on the surface. Additionally, surface disordering of this ice model is observed at polar stratospheric temperatures when HCl is adsorbed at this site. The partial dissociation of H...
The mechanisms and kinetics of reactions important to the troposphere have been investigated using a high pressure, turbulent, discharge-flow technique coupled to a chemical ionization mass spectrometer. The ability to accurately model tropospheric chemistry depends on kinetic and mechanistic information for a wide variety of species. The gas-phase chemistry of the troposphere is dominated by the oxidation of trace species such as methane. One important intermediate in the oxidation of methane is the methylperoxy radical (CH302). The kinetic rate coefficient of the reaction of CH302 with NO was measured at 298 K and 100 Torr. The kinetics of the reaction of CH302 with HO2 were then examined. Aromatics are another important class of trace species found in the troposphere. The daytime oxidation of toluene is initiated by reaction with th...
