The concept of "Development" has changed during the time. Recently it acquired a new social, politics, economic and cultural dimension, including issues such as human rights, liberty, democracy, cultural diversity, etc.. The alternative development model proposed by some authors stresses the concept of empowerment, which indeed alerts us to the crucial nature of those dimensions. Though considering the different cooperation for development actors, we shall focus here on the intervention of the Catholic Church. In fact, the areas where the Catholic Church intervenes or shows the potential to intervene upon are multiple. This diversity of influence is based on the capacity of the Catholic Church to integrate the very core of the local communities, bringing not only the resources, but the needed mechanisms to the effort of creating awaren...
Background. Polyploidization is a major evolutionary process in plants where hybridization and chromosome doubling induce enormous genomic stress and can generate genetic and epigenetic modifications. However, proper evaluation of DNA sequence restructuring events and the precise characterization of sequences involved are still sparse. Methodology/Principal Findings. Inter Retrotransposons Amplified Polymorphism (IRAP), Retrotransposons Microsatellite Amplified Polymorphism (REMAP) and Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) largely confirmed the absence of any intraspecific variation in wheat, rye and triticale. The comparative analysis of banding profiles between wheat and rye inbred lines revealed 34% of monomorphic (common to both parental species) bands for the ten different primer combinations used. The analysis of triticale pl...
The presented Model of Irrigation Management was designed for application on green spaces and leisure areas. The Model recognizes water as a production key-factor and optimizes its use on the irrigation of green spaces, giving particular attention to the temporal and spatial variation of input variables. Variables entered in the Model included existing or future target plant species, phenological phases, type of soil (i.e. location and physical characteristics), topography and climate factors. Model construction was similar to the methods outlined in FAO Report 56, namely: the method of Penman-Monteith for the calculation of reference evapotranspiration, the use of dual cultural coefficients to obtain cultural evapotranspirationand the opportunity of irrigation according to the hydric balance. The Model integrates t...
ABSTRACT: A survey on seroprevalence of Q fever agent, Coxiella burnetii, in sheep flocks in the Montemor-o-Novo district was performed in order to: i) estimate the prevalence of positive flocks; ii)the animal prevalence within the flock. Thirty-five flocks were randomly selected, comprising a total of 726 sheep. Blood samples were collected to be tested by an ELISA commercial kit for the detection of phase I and phase II anti-C. burnetii antibodies. Twenty flocks (57.1%) were identified with at least one positive animal. The prevalence within the flocks ranged between 3% and 50%. The epidemiological surveys and the investigation of outbreaks that occurred in the last years in several European countries show that Q fever must be considered an increasing public health concem, being the ruminants identified as the main source of ...
The main objective of this work was the development of a new product, a Rocha pear pulp nutritionally and sensory stabilized. The produced pulp also contains blackberry, lemon/pineapple and wheat bran. It’s possible to produce an antioxidant and fibre enriched food from an important pear variety, very characteristic from portuguese Oeste region. This type of product is very instable and this is revealed by its colour. To prevent this situation the study was based on chemical stabilization which was achieved by using two additives: ascorbic acid and citric acid. The work was developed in several phases. Firstly it was studied the effect of the additive application on pulp darkening followed by the establishment of formulation limits in what concerns to additives concentration. Then pulps were produced in accordance with the tem...
