Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is an uncommon benign fibro-osseous abnormality of bone, of unknown aetiology and equal sex incidence, which is most commonly restricted to one bone (monostotic FD: MFD, 70%). Less commonly multiple bones are affected (polyostotic FD: PFD, 27%). Vertebral involvement is uncommon (4%), but more common with PFD (7 – 24%) than MFD (1%). Of 20 cases of FD involving the cervical spine, only three have represented MFD. Unlike cases associated with PFD, all cases presented with acute neck pain without significant neurological impairment after minor trauma. This article discusses the complexities of facilitating community-based rehabilitation in resource-poor contexts in Sub-Saharan Africa. It does so through a reflection on the book Able-Bodied: Scenes from a Curious Life, written by Leslie Swartz, a South African expert on disability in the context of international development. Swartz uses his own personal experiences as son of a disabled father as a springboard for reflections on his long involvement in the often-fraught areas of disability research and activism. He pays particular attention to the way in which emotions shape the struggles around expertise and power that bedevil disability identity politics. In particular, his work highlights how the complex dynamics of race, class and disability undermine the effectiveness of the movement.
The peroxynitrite-induced functional impairment of myosin was studied in different reaction conditions, known to alter the oxidative chemistry of peroxynitrite, to better understand the molecular mechanisms of this interaction. It is shown that peroxynitrite is able to enhance the basal MgATPase activity up to 2-fold while inhibiting the actin-stimulated ATPase activity of myosin and that the extent of these functional alterations is dependent on the reaction medium. The observed changes in the stimulation of the MgATPase activity correlate with the extent of carbonyl formation in myosin. The enzyme inhibition is more potent in conditions where the effi ciency of tyrosine nitration and peroxynitrite reactivity towards sulphydryls are lower.

BACKGROUND: Transforming growth factors (TGF-alpha and -beta1) play important roles in intestinal growth and repair. To further understand their roles in the pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), this study examined changes in their expression in colonic mucosa of adolescents with IBD. METHODS: TGF-alpha and -beta1 expression was examined by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. RESULTS: TGF-gamma immunostaining and mRNA labelling appeared unchanged in the epithelium of specimens with active IBD. Similarly, expression of epithelial TGF-beta1 remained unaltered in IBD. However, the numbers of TGF-beta1-positive cells, including T cells, neutrophils, and monocytes/macrophages, in the lamina propria increased during disease activity. Introduction: Rare cancers together account for about 22% of new cancer diagnoses each year, which is more than any single common cancer. They constitute a serious public health problem with distinctive challenges. Compared with common cancers, less is known about their etiology and molecular pathology, and therapeutic options are mostly poorly evidence based with outcomes that are on average inferior to those of more common cancers. There is, therefore, a pressing need for well-organized clinical research to address these deficiencies. Objective: Major depression is expected to become the second leading contributor to disease burden worldwide by 2020. Only a few studies, however, have compared the cost-effectiveness of a combination of cognitive behavioural therapy and antidepressant therapy versus antidepressant therapy alone. The purpose of the present study was therefore to analyse cost-effectiveness, from the perspective of the health-care system and also from a social perspective, comparing combined cognitive behavioural therapy + antidepressant therapy and antidepressant therapy alone in the Japanese setting.
