ISCTE – Lisbon University Institute, through its IT Services has decided to adopt the ITIL® v3 to match its IT services management practice to the best known practices for future certification of their services according to the norm ISO/ IEC 20000:2005. Considering that there are no ITIL® v3 implementation studies within Portuguese academic institutions that can be used as reference to the organizational units that supply the IT services for these same institutions, a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive research took place. This research, supported on a case study, has its main objective to identify what can be gathered from the study of incident management process and request fulfillment process implementation, according the ITIL® v3 best practices, within this institution. The project was divided in two major phases, (i) existin...
Discussing the internationalization of higher education from the perspective of globalization, of the European Union and of the particular case of Portugal, this study aims to explore the motives and expectations of international students coming to study in this country. We are also concerned with the conditions of reception and social and academic integration, considering that all of these factors may influence academic performance. Thus, we proceeded to a case study within the ISCTE, with 15 interviews to students from Angola, Brazil and Cape Verde, attending master and doctoral courses. It was found that the choice of Portugal and Lisbon reflected the existence of a local support network (family and friends), the perception of a cultural similarity, especially by sharing the Portuguese, and the pursuit of an internationally recogniz...
This article discusses key variables that shape the willingness of faculty to work with librarians in higher education establishments. We use the Librarian-Library/Faculty Relationship Model to highlight the variables which faculty members consider to be the most relevant in that relationship. The article begins with a discussion of the causes of tensions between faculty and librarians. This is followed by a descriptive and co-relational study of the ISCTE-IUL University Institute of Lisbon library. The study uses qualitative and quantitative methods, namely a focus group and a survey. There was a good fit between the Librarian-Library/Faculty Relationship Model and the data (CMIN/DF=4.067), and the model explained 58% of the dependent variable, namely faculty willingness to collaborate with librarians. Our final model confirmed the re...
This thesis aimed to identify strategies for integrating Angolan students enrolled in the 2nd and 3rd cycle of higher education in the University Institute of Lisbon and understand its influence in reconfiguring their identities. We used the interview as a technique for the collection of data that were analyzed according to the literature. It was possible to identify three strategies: closing, opening and hybrid. It was concluded that the identities of these students are reconfigured in a segmented way and to varying degrees, depending on the orientation of their networks of sociability and they face difficulties of integration. There was not found strong overlap between the strategies and sociographic main characteristics of respondents.
