This article describes the gated condominiums phenomenon, using a specific interpretative and analytical approach and drawing on a particular example - the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. We suggest a way of interpreting the phenomenon, and analyze its main variable aspects and its history and how it has expanded.

Portuguese Architecture: Lisbon 1938-1948) elaborates a critical revision of the
concepts and the history of modern architecture and traditionalist architecture in the
period between 1838 and 1948, focusing on the city of Lisbon. In this work are
researched the works, the projects and the architectural culture of the respective authors
- expressed in their education, study trips, exhibitions, conferences, essays, periodical
publications and competitions - unfolding a transversal reading, revealing convergences,
contradictions, and confronting the theoretical production with the material production.

following dissertation traces their socio-professional profi le in Lisbon between 1890 and 1914.
During this period a signifi cant rise in the number of seamstresses was observed, thanks to new developments
within fashion and widespread visibility of these patterns, through the press. To attest to
this increase, the fi rst trade associations of seamstresses were founded, respectively; in 1895 and 1896.
